I worked for nine years in the not-for-profit space, two in politics and seven in the arts. Leadership is doubly important in such organisations with their limited resources and complex business models. I therefore offer our online V|E|C|T|O|R Tool Kit FREE to not-for-profits.

I was Federal Director of the Liberal Party of Australia in 1974/75. After a sojourn back in the private sector, I established a foundation to bring private sector skills, training and funding to the arts. This in turn led the Federal Government, in the early 1980s, to appoint me for a three-year term as Executive Chairman of the Australia Council, its national funding and policy-advisory agency. My time in these full-time roles deepened my interest in national policy of all types and particularly in the arts, which has been a lifelong passion.

Across the rest of my career, I've contributed free consulting or other input to a range of organisations - including those involved in medical research, supporting people with disabilities, presenting the arts, and researching national policy issues.

I am a firm believer in the importance of voluntary and not-for-profit organisations and they have quite specific leadership and strategic issues. Often, the most daunting challenge is to balance their social and fiduciary responsibilities: demand may be large while budgets are tight and they have few, if any, capital reserves. Another challenge for many is a diversity of (sometimes conflicting) constituencies. For these and other reasons, leadership is critically important. Hence, my commitment to make the V|E|C|T|O|R tools available free.
